Under Penal Code 1659, it is illegal to sell any "generally prohibited weapon." The following types of firearms and firearm accessories are considered to be “generally prohibited.”

- Cane guns
- Guns that are not immediately recognizable as firearms
- Large-capacity magazines
- Multi-burst trigger activators
- Short-barreled rifles & shotguns
- Unconventional pistols
- Undetectable firearms
- Wallet guns
- Zip guns
California also has a ban on assault weapons, which includes punishments for manufacturing, selling, and/or possessing assault weapons without a proper permit. .50 BMG rifles are also prohibited in California.

According to “felon with a firearm" gun laws in California, a “firearm” is any device designed to be used as a weapon, from which a projectile is expelled through a barrel by the force of an explosion or other type of combustive method. Anyone convicted of a felony offense in any state, or by any other government or country cannot legally purchase or own a gun in California.
Unlawful possession or ownership of a gun by a felon is treated as a felony offense and caries the following penalties of:
- 16 months, or 2 or3 years in county jail
- A maximum fine of $10,000
