St. Patrick's Day Weekend DUIs Become Top Focus for OC Law Enforcement

St. Patrick's Day is next Tuesday - March 17th - and that means many people in the OC and Southern California will be celebrating St. Patty's Day throughout the coming weekend. Whether your weekend plans involve Irish-themed parties or plenty of green beer, our criminal defense attorneys at the Law Offices of Virginia L. Landry, Inc. would like to remind you that law enforcement will be increasing their focus on DUIs and other alcohol-related crimes.

St. Patrick's Day, like many other American holidays, has become a popular and proven excuse for letting loose. For many, St. Patrick's Day is a time to drink, perhaps because many associate the Irish culture with the love of beer and spirits.

Whatever the reasons behind its popularity, St. Patrick's Day has become a drinking holiday. Unfortunately, this means St. Patty's Day also sees far higher rates of alcohol-involved auto accidents, injuries, and deaths than other days of the year. As a result, law enforcement agencies do everything they can to protect public safety and make sure people are obeying the law.

Local Police agencies have announced planned DUI checkpoints this weekend, including:

  • Garden Grove - Friday, March 13th 9:00 pm - 3:00 am at an undisclosed location.
  • Newport Beach - Friday, March 13th 8:00 pm - 2:00 am at an undisclosed location.
  • Irvine - Friday March, 13th 8:00 pm - 2:00 am. MacArthur Blvd. & Campus Drive
  • Huntington Beach - Saturday, March 14th 7:00 pm - 3:00 am at an undisclosed location.

OC authorities will also be focusing on the following:

  • Saturation Patrols - Local law enforcement officers will commonly increase patrols during weekends and special holidays or events in order to have more "boots on the ground." Expect more patrol cars policing areas known for drinking or crime and expect these officers to be looking for signs of impaired drivers, which includes swerving.
  • Sobriety Checkpoints - Checkpoints have become one of the main DUI enforcement tools used by law enforcement. These checkpoints are set up at locations and times known for higher rates of alcohol-involved incidents (i.e. near the bars after midnight). Officers will screen motorists for signs of drug or alcohol impairment. They also check to ensure motorists are properly licensed and that they do not have outstanding warrants.
  • Other Alcohol-Related Crimes - Weekends and holidays bring with them a spike in crime, and St. Patrick's Day is no different. In addition to an increased focus on DUIs, officers will also be on the lookout for other crimes common where alcohol and parties are present, including public intoxication, assault or battery, minor in possession, drug possession, and vandalism, among others.

Our defense attorneys have represented many individuals who were arrested for DUI and other crimes during holidays, weekends, and periods of increased enforcement.
